Short answer

Marlow sits on the River Thames, and parts of the town have flooded from the river and from groundwater. A flood scheme finished in 2018 lowered the risk for about 287 properties. Many homes date from 1945 to 1999. Marlow has more older people living alone than England as a whole.

Which parts of Marlow have flooded?

Low ground near the Thames and in the east of town. The Environment Agency finished the 9.5 million pound Marlow flood alleviation scheme in autumn 2018. It says the scheme reduced the river and groundwater risk to some 287 properties.

In eastern Marlow, Buckinghamshire Council names Dedmere Road, The Croft, Quarrydale Drive and Fieldhouse Lane as roads prone to flooding. Its Newt Ditch scheme aims to help about 100 homes there.

The council says blocked culverts are a main cause. Tree roots and silt cut the space for water. The earlier Thames scheme added walls and embankments near Gossmore Lane and Pound Lane, and a pump that sends groundwater back to the river.

What homes are in Marlow?

Mostly 20th-century houses. In the Marlow East and Marlow West and North areas, 40.0 per cent of homes on the Council Tax list date from 1945 to 1972. Another 29.8 per cent are from 1973 to 1999.

Only 11.0 per cent date from 2000 or later. That is below the England share of 18.1 per cent.

Detached and terraced houses are both common in Marlow ward. They held 34.6 and 23.4 per cent of households.

Do many older people in Marlow live alone?

Yes, more than in England overall. In 2021, 859 households in Marlow ward were one person aged 66 or over. That is 18.1 per cent, against 12.8 per cent for England.

In these homes, small jobs such as grab rails, door chains and smoke alarm tests can matter most.

Ask for a written price before work starts. You do not have to agree to work offered at the door.

Are there conservation or landscape rules?

Yes, both apply in parts of town. Buckinghamshire Council has a character survey for the Marlow conservation area.

Land on the northern edge of the town is inside the Chilterns National Landscape. The town centre is outside it.

In the conservation area, give the council 6 weeks notice before you cut back most trees.

Questions

Who do I call about a blocked culvert in Marlow?

Report it to Buckinghamshire Council, which runs flood work such as the Newt Ditch scheme. A handyman can clear your own gutters and drains.

Can a handyman move my gas meter?

No. Your gas supplier or a Gas Safe registered engineer must do this. The law forbids anyone else from doing gas work for pay.

Can I sign up for Thames flood warnings in Marlow?

Yes. The Environment Agency has a warning area for the River Thames at Bisham village and Marlow town. Sign up free on GOV.UK.
