Fence panel, post and gate repairs

Short answer

A handyman can fit a new fence panel, replace a rotten post or rehang a dropped gate. In England, a fence usually needs no planning permission up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre beside a road. In a conservation area, taking down a wall needs permission. Check who owns the fence first. This page lists local firms.

Jobs handymen do

Most fence repairs follow a winter gale or a post that has rotted at ground level. These jobs suit a handyman.

  • Slot a new panel between sound posts.
  • Replace a broken timber or concrete post.
  • Add a gravel board to keep the panel off wet soil.
  • Rehang a gate, or fit new hinges, a latch or a bolt.
  • Stain or paint a fence or gate.

Height limits

Permitted development rights let most householders build or renew a boundary without an application, within set heights. Class A of Part 2 of the 2015 Order sets them.

  • Next to a road for cars, or its pavement: 1 metre at most.
  • Elsewhere in the garden: 2 metres at most.
  • The right does not cover listed buildings or land that goes with them.
  • An Article 4 direction, or a condition on the planning permission for your home, can take the right away.

Conservation areas and old walls

In a conservation area, you need planning permission to demolish buildings or structures, walls included, says Buckinghamshire Council. Many Chiltern towns have old brick and flint garden walls. Ask the council before a wall comes down.

Newer estates can have their own limits. A planning condition can remove the right to put up a fence or wall without permission. Check the planning conditions for your home before you change a front boundary.

Before work starts

Find out who owns the fence. Your deeds or the seller’s property forms may show it. Talk to your neighbour before work on a shared boundary.

Get the quote to list materials, labour and disposal of the old timber separately. Published figures are on our fence panel prices page.

Questions

How tall can a back garden fence be?

Usually up to 2 metres without planning permission, measured from the ground. Beside a road used by vehicles, the limit is 1 metre. A listing, an Article 4 direction or a planning condition can change this.

Can I take down an old garden wall in a conservation area?

Not without asking. Buckinghamshire Council says demolishing structures, including walls, in a conservation area needs planning permission.

Who pays to fix a shared fence?

The owner of the fence. Your deeds may show who that is. If it is not clear, agree it with your neighbour before work starts.
