Typical odd jobs
An odd job is a short task, from a few minutes to half a day. A list of jobs for one visit gives you more for any minimum charge.
Text the firm a photo of each job, with sizes, a day or two ahead. It can then arrive with parts that fit.
- Ease a sticking door, or refit a latch, hinge or lock.
- Hang curtain poles, blinds, mirrors and pictures.
- Fix a loose banister, shelf bracket or cupboard door.
- Renew the silicone seal round a bath or shower tray.
- Swap a worn tap washer, or fit a new toilet seat.
- Fit draught strips and letter-box brushes.
Jobs that need a registered trade
By law, gas fittings and appliances are for Gas Safe registered engineers only. HSE says this applies to anyone paid for gas work in a home.
A new circuit, a new consumer unit, or new work near a bath or shower is notifiable under Part P. A small change to an existing circuit in a dry room is not. Any electrical work must still be safe.
Help for older people
Age UK runs two handyperson services in the county. Age UK Buckinghamshire sends a self-employed handyperson to people over 55 in the Buckinghamshire Council area, not Milton Keynes. You supply the materials.
Age UK Milton Keynes fits key safes and grab rails. It publishes a labour rate of £36 an hour, and a fitted key safe from £65.
If the job makes rubbish
Waste from your home is your responsibility, even after someone else takes it away. Buckinghamshire Council says to check that a contractor is a registered waste carrier before you hand waste over.
You can check the Environment Agency register online. Ask where the waste will go, and avoid paying in cash.
How firms price odd jobs
Most handymen charge by the hour, often with a higher first hour. TradesPro in Aylesbury publishes £40 an hour. UK Handyman Ltd in Marlow publishes £75 for the first hour and £65 for the second.

Questions
Can a handyman replace a ceiling light?
In most rooms, yes. Part P does not require notice for a straight swap on the same circuit, outside the bathroom zones. It must be done safely. Adding a circuit needs notice.
Can a handyman move my gas cooker?
Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may disconnect and reconnect it. Moving a gas cooker counts as gas work in law.
Is there a cheaper service for older people?
Age UK Buckinghamshire runs a handyperson service for people over 55 outside Milton Keynes. Age UK Milton Keynes fits key safes and grab rails at £36 an hour for labour.
