Short answer
Aylesbury is a town of terraces, flats and newer estates. Most homes date from after 1945, and over a quarter from 2000 or later. Typical handyman jobs are flat-pack, shelves, doors and gutters. Near Bear Brook, keep drains and gullies clear. Gas work and new circuits stay with registered specialists.

What sort of homes are in Aylesbury?
Mostly terraced and semi-detached houses, with many flats. The 2021 Census counted 29,235 households in the 6 Aylesbury town wards. Of these, 31.1 per cent lived in a terraced house, against 23.0 per cent for England.
Another 20.0 per cent lived in a purpose-built flat. Only 13.2 per cent had a detached house. Some 494 households were in shared ownership, so a housing association may own part of the home.
If you rent or part-own, read your agreement before you pay for a repair. It often says who fixes doors, windows and fences.
How old is the housing stock?
Young, by national standards. Across the 10 Aylesbury areas on the Council Tax list, 34.6 per cent of homes date from 1973 to 1999. Another 28.2 per cent were built in 2000 or later. Only 5.8 per cent are from before 1919.
The centre is different. In the Aylesbury Central area, 28.2 per cent of homes are from before 1919, beside many new flats.
HSE says homes built or refurbished before 2000 can contain asbestos. In an older house, ask the handyman how they check before they drill or sand a textured ceiling.
Which Aylesbury streets have a flood warning?
The Environment Agency runs two flood warning areas for Bear Brook and its tributaries in the town. One runs from Broughton to Haydon Mill Farm and takes in the Hilda Wharf and California areas.
The other runs from Walton Court, in the Ellen Road area, down to St Marys School and Keen Close.
In these parts, clear leaves from gullies, gutters and air bricks each autumn. Check your own address on the GOV.UK long term flood risk service.
Do conservation rules affect small jobs in the old town?
Yes, in the historic core. Buckinghamshire Council publishes one appraisal for the Aylesbury, Walton and Wendover Road conservation areas.
A conservation area is article 2(3) land under the permitted development order. There, you cannot clad an outside wall in render, timber, tiles or plastic without planning permission.
A satellite dish also needs care. It must not go on a chimney, wall or roof slope that faces and can be seen from a road.
Questions
Can a handyman fit a new socket circuit in my Aylesbury kitchen?
Not on their own. A new circuit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. Use an electrician on a competent person scheme, or get building control approval first.
Who owns the fence on a new Aylesbury estate?
Your title plan and transfer deed usually show this. Some estates also have planning conditions that limit fences at the front. Check your planning history with Buckinghamshire Council.
Is there a flood warning service for Aylesbury?
Yes. The Environment Agency has flood warning areas for Bear Brook in the town. You can sign up for free warnings on GOV.UK.
